Michigan ranked worst state for auto crime
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (FOX 2) – Friendly reminder to always practice safe driving habits.
A recent study published by ScrapCarComparison found that Michigan has the highest car theft rate in the country.
The study analyzed more than 200,000 tweets from Twitter using the social media analysis tool Octoparse. The total number of tweets mentioning keywords like “stolen car” in countries and cities around the world was sorted from highest to lowest to reveal the locations with the most car thefts. The study did not say how long it monitored the tweets.
Michigan Drivers posted 2,173 tweets related to car theft. According to Detroit police, data shows auto theft has increased 24% since 2021.
Tennessee came in 2nd place, followed by Washington in 3rd place. Amazingly, Hawaii was ranked #4. This dream destination has a high number of beach car thefts. Hawaii Drivers posted 1,930 tweets about stolen cars.
The next states with the most car thefts are Idaho, Texas, Iowa, Indiana, Alaska and Vermont.
To prevent your car from being stolen, it is important to:
- Always lock your car doors.
- Avoid isolated parking spaces.
- Hide your valuables.
- Leave your important documents at home.
- Keep your keys up to date – Don’t leave them inside your vehicle.
To keep your car safe, park in well-lit areas near other cars. Avoid parking between large trucks and vans as carjackers can hide behind these vehicles.
